Belgrade Summer Festival

The spirit of Belgrade in summer is described and confirmed by Belef, Belgrade Summer Festival. The festival comprises
three major art domains: stage art (theater and dance), visual arts (video-art, inslallations,
performances and prints) and music. Through a series of visiting presentations, Belef own production and co-production with cultural institutions, summer festivals of the same kind, Belef induces further engagements, upbringing and development of creative potentials, interest and researching force of individuals and audience at large. Interacting with the environment, animating new urban areas and sites of cultural happenings, the Belgrade Summer Festival eagerly tells a story of Belgrade as large city and its tolerant, communicative and urban kind.
With Belef Belgrade is an open city. Its numerous attractions, such as Klamegdan fortress, Ada Ciganlija, the blocks of Novi Beograd, the Sava and the Danube river banks, just as theaters as well, are the places where the best essence is presented and inspired. At first this induces a sweet-bitter sensation, temptation, stimulus to go on and then becomes a valuable memory.
Belef was founder under the auspices of the City of Belgrade Assembly, namely the Secretariat of culture. They are in charge of appointing the members of the Belef council, the council president and the selectors for the three artistic categories (two-year mandate). The charges include also the selection of the production executive and other program related activities.

Belgrade International Theater Festival (BITEF) was initiated in 1967 and then from it has continually followed and acknowledged the latest trends of theater art.
As the festival grew and developed, it has become one of the top five European festivals and won a most respectable place in the theter world map. It is one of the major national cultural institutions. The importance of BITEF is strong enough to overcome all political and cultural boundaries. Therefore the history of BITEF may be regarded as the history of modern theater art.
In the revolutionary sixties and seventies of the 20th century, the initiators and pioneers of the festival – Mira Trailović, Jovan Ćirilov and their assocoates – were courageous in following tumultuous events in the world theater stage, the program of which was aboundant with avantgarde experiments.
In the eighties, BITEF presented to Belgrade the top achievements of the theater art and became one of a few festivals where experimental forms and important classic masperpieces were equally represented. In spite of the political and economic crisis and the sanctions in the last decade of the 20th century, owing to generous support from foreign cultural centers, government and NGOs, BITEF managed to keep peace with the world by promoting new trends in theater art and ultimate theater values. In this way BITEF has stayed in the family of great world festivals and proved that in the society it originated from it represents an antitraditional phenomenon and epochal value of the Serbian culture.

Serbian National Brands: Guca (Guča)

The first Dragačevski Sabor Trubača (Dragačevo gathering of trumpeters) was held in 1961. I the last ten years Guča has become internationally recognized capital of the trumpet. Trumpet players and folk music and dance ensambles from the world are deeply honored to be invited to Dragačevski Sabor and visitors arrive from Mexico, Spain, Greece, Denmark, China…
Virtuoso musicians that we could meet and listen to in Guča are largely completely selfeducated. They play following their sense of hearing and quite spontaneously, relying on musical memory. Their music comes from their soul and heart and audience is delighted just for these qualities.
The number of visitors is ever-increasing from year to year. The record visit was achieved in 2002 when Guca welcomed over 300.000 visitors.
The next 50th Dragačevski Sabor Trubača will be held from 13-22/08/2010.

EXIT NOISE SUMMER FEST is the major music festival in the South-East Europe. It has been organized since 2001, on the magnificent Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad. The number of visitors coming to the festival has been
increasing.
Young people arrive from all parts of our country and from other European countries as well. Except for its top quality music program, people use to visit EXIT for good quality entertainment, nice atmosphere and positive energy felt in the city. The following EXIT festival is going to take place from 08-11/07/2010.

Serbian National Identity: Letter

Writing letters are means to communicate over space and time. Generally, it could be any system of visual forms (drawings, figures, symbols, signs and combinations thereof) that are intended for the purpose of memorizing and providing information; more specifi-cally defined writing is a system of signs that represent certain elements of spoken language: words, syllables and sounds. In the end 9th century the first Slavic writing appeared: glagoljica, including 38 letters.
The name is related to the Old Slavic verb – glagolati, i.e. to speak. The system of writing was established by the brothers Ćirilo and Metodije, who are assumed as the founders of the Slavic literacy. Since this is a dificult to realise and rather complex system of writing, in the 10th century, among Slavs in Bulgaria, a simpler and easibly readible system of writing – ćirilica appeared. These writing letters originated from the Greek consitutional, liturgical letters, where from 24 letters were adopted. For the Old Slavic sounds that could not be found in the Greek language, special letters were created, mostly respective to glagoljica letters.

As the first dated memorial of Cyrillic writing we assumed the Samuilo inscription from 993. The earliest preserved Serbian manuscript in Cyrillic writing is Miroslavljevo jevanđelje (the Gospel of Miroslav) of the late 12th century, and the first book in the Balkans that was printed in Cyrillic was Oktoih Osmoglasnik. The printing of this book was completed on 04.01.1494 in the printing shop of Đurađ Crnojević in Obod near Cetinje, which was run by the monk Makarije. The Gospel of Miroslav is the major and the most prominent monument of the Serbian literacy of the 12th century. It was worked out about 1185, probably in Kotor, on the order of Miroslav, the knez of Zahumlje, who used to be a brother of Stefan Nemanja, the great count of Raška, and for the use of the church St. Peter in Bijelo Polje. The greatest part of gospel text is the doing of unknown copyist (called Varsemeleon for
research purposes), while dijak Gligorije, another copyist, wrote the final part of the manuscript, several short notes and complited it with ornaments. Until 1896 the manuscript had been stored in Hilandar, when it was given as a gift to Aleksandar Obrenović on the occasion of his visit to Athos. Today the manuscript is stored preserved in the National Museum of Belgrade.

It was in Russia during the rule of Petar the Great, in the early 18th century, that the Old Church Slavic Cyrillic writing was replaced by so called civil Cyrillic. The purpose of the reform initiated by Peter the Great was that the old Cyrillic forms are harmonized with the modern European forms of Latin writing. Eventually the reform of the Serbian Cyrillic writing was implemented by Vuk Karadžić in 1818: unnecessary letters of the Russian alphabet were left out, and six new letters were introduced in the Serbian alphabet (ć, đ, lj, nj, j and dž). The Cyrillic writing by Vuk was officially recognized only I n 1868. It represents the most consistent phonetic writing in the world.

The both writings, glagoljica and Cyrillic, were created for the Old Slavic language, which was the first Slavic literary language (10th-12th century), which today it is not mother tongue of any Slavic nation. Gradually, this language assumed certain features of the colloquial language spoken within the people and there from originated the Serbian edition of the Old Slavic, which is called the Serbian Slavic language. Russians and Bulgarians shared the same experience.
The Serbian Slavic language was used in ecclestiastical writings from 12th to the first half 18th century, when the Russian Slavic was adopted as ecclestiastical and literary language.

Introducing the linguistic and orthography reform of Vuk Karadžić in 1818 the literary language was changed, while the Serbian Orthodox Church maintained the Russian Slavic in use for religious service. According to the words St. Apostle Paul, Christian family is a small church. Just as each Christian church is dedicated to one saint that is praised as a patron, so a Serbian familiy used to be put under patronage of one saint, to whom they address their prayers before God and whom they respect as the family patron. To the saint patron Serbian families dedicate and maintain regular feasts 3).
Family feast is a glorious expression of the Serbian otrodox faith and a specific feature of national identity, since these rites are maintained with Serbs only.
